Day 16:Adelaide South Australia

Today is a short post, as Stephen retired and his work put on a big “do”. Lovely, but it meant we didn’t get home till very late and the wines have gone to my fingers…

I loved this quote on the official South Australia website:
“Lonely Planet recently named Adelaide as one of the world’s top 10 cities to visit in 2014. Adelaide is the only Australian city to be listed in the Best in Travel 2014 series, aptly described as “effortlessly chic – and like a perfectly cellared red, it’s ready to be uncorked and sampled”.”

And it’s not surprising. Great shopping, wonderful vineyards, excellent theatre, super restaurants… with around 1 million people, Adelaide is like Wellington, within walking distance of so much and easy to get anywhere - not far from the airport, beaches, hills. They have a great zoo and lovely botanical gardens. It’s a city that suits singles, couples and families as a holiday destination. Adelaide is like Christchurch, too – sharing the same architect, although I think maybe he learned something after building Christchurch, and sited Adelaide past the swamp, rather than on it. The swampy land was a major reason for the devastation in the recent major earthquakes in Christchurch.

We went quite a few years ago – the year New Zealand first won the America’s Cup, to be precise – and we watched the teams race wearing our red socks to support Sir Peter Blake. Tragically that was the year Australia One sank. We hired a car and driver –  one of the Hot Rods! – and piled in. The driver took us everywhere. The kids were thrilled with koalas and kangaroos, the fancy car, everything. We took the tram to the beach and got caught up in a bank robbery, meaning our tram was stopped, and was swarming with police. We were all  carefully scrutinised and questioned and had our bags searched. The kids loved all the excitement.

At the top of the Myers Centre was a playground and a train and the kids loved that too. Don’t know if it’s still there.

Shopping was excellent, lots of interesting quirky places.

Adelaide hosts heaps of great events – Womadelaide, featured on the website the other day, the Adelaide Festival, Adelaide Fringe, Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Adelaide International Guitar Festival, Adelaide Film Festival, Carnevale (Italian), Glendi (Greek) and Schutzenfest (German). They have hosted the Santos Tour Down Under, and the Formula One Grand Prix.  Try to squeeze in a vineyard tour if you have time.

Vintage car lovers; make sure you see the Bay to Birdwood Classic. It’s the world’s longest running historic motoring event.
