Day 17: Houseboating on the Murray River

The Murray River flows 2,530 km through New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia to the Southern Ocean and a journey along part or all of it is an amazing way to experience a part of Australia that many people miss.

Friends of ours (a couple) took their respective mothers for a seven day holiday on a houseboat on the Murray River – and all lived to tell the tale. I thought it pretty amazing, managing to survive having both mothers-in-law 24/7, and truly enjoying the journey. They raved about it, and it’s on my list. I tried to get our walking group to join us on a houseboat, stopping each day for walks, but I haven’t succeeded - yet.

Cruising up and down Australia's greatest river on your own fully self-contained houseboat holiday must be one of the best ways to really disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life. There's an abundance of wildlife, character rich towns, stunning riverscapes, redgum forests, abundant wildlife, ancient fossilised limestone cliffs and hundreds of kilometres of stunning landscapes just waiting for you.

Give yourself a great Murray escape from everything by packing all you need for your trip, or if prefer a bit of activity, stop enroute to enjoy the richness of cosmopolitan towns all soaked in Australian culture and lifestyle.
The Discover Murray Trail is a great opportunity to explore one of the world’s great river systems at your own pace, taking in the unique heritage, ecology, national parks and character of the river and mallee towns. Every bend in the river bend brings a new and different view.
The Trail showcases the 5 great landscapes of the Murray and offers a memorable and stunning experience. The first landscape is the Mountains east of Albury-Wodonga, where the Murray begins the journey and starts as a small stream near Corryong.

You will then travel through the steep river banks and river gums that begin around Yarrawonga Mulwala through Echuca-Moama. Near Swan Hill through South Australia, the Murray changes again and winds through the beautiful expansive mallee regions touching on outback Australia, finally reaching the limestone cliffs between Waikerie to Mannu. The enormous cliffs are truly inspiring. Finally, the Murray ends its long journey at the Plains, Lakes and Mouth near Goolwa and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert and the Coorong.

On your way, you get to meet some of the other inhabitants, like this Murray River Turtle, the platypus or a kangaroo lazing in the sun. All part of this rich, unique experience.
To plan your trip, go to Discover Murray River.

The many houseboat operators offer a wide choice of houseboats from budget to 5 star. Or, if you prefer a fast pace, you could try a ski boat. I think I prefer the slow and beautifully quiet way.
